Where to go skiing in Oneida County
It’s easy to find winter adventures in northern Wisconsin: just grab a pair of skis and set out into the woods. Oneida County is home to outstanding options for cross-country skiing, and downhill skiers and snowboarders can even find great places to explore.
Minocqua Winter Park
One of the Midwest’s premier cross-country skiing destinations, Minocqua Winter Park (about a 20-minute drive from downtown) is a 6,500-acre winter wonderland that has more than 85 kilometers (53 miles) of top-notch cross-country ski trails for skiers of all skill levels. All the park’s main trails are groomed for skate and classic skiing, and the 15km Wilderness Multi-Use trails are also open to fat biking and snowshoeing. Learn more.
Other cross-country skiing options
Oneida County is also home to several other outstanding options for cross-country skiing, including trails located in county parks and routes that can be found in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. Here are three to try:
- Almon Park Trail: This 160-acre park south of Rhinelander is home to 1-mile and 1.25-mile nature trails that are open to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking in the winter; a trail pass (available on site) is required for snowshoeing and skiing.
- Enterprise Winter Recreation Trail: Located southeast of Rhinelander, this trail system offers 8 miles of routes (two 4-mile loops) that are open to cross-country skiing; trails are groomed for fat tire biking.
- McNaughton Trail: Located in the sprawling Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest south of Lake Tomahawk, this trail system has separate trails for skate skiing and classic skiing; it’s a good trail for beginners as it’s not too hilly.
- Tara Lila Trails: Explore more than 20 miles of trails on three separate park units (Sundstein Road, Ripco Road, and Section 9) near Three Lakes and Sugar Camp in northeastern Oneida County.

Camp 10 Ski Area, Rhinelander
This downhill ski area about 10 miles southwest of Rhinelander is home to 15 downhill runs, two T-bar lifts, and a tow rope for beginners, as well as ski, snowboard, and snowshoe rentals. Depending on conditions, the hill is open from 9:30am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays from mid-December through mid-March and daily during the Christmas/New Year’s holiday.
